F.A.Q.

Medicine Buddha or Sangay Menla (སངས་རྒྱས་སྨན་བླ) as he is known in Tibetan, is the Buddha that Tibetan Medicine Doctors pray to. He is the Buddha who cures suffering using the medicine of his teachings. Medicine Buddha is depicted in the blue colour of the gemstone lapis lazuli. His left hand rests in the meditation pose and he holds a healing plant on his right hand.
The practice of reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra below and visualisation of the Medicine Buddha at the same time is said to decrease physical and mental illness and suffering. The Medicine Buddha mantra can be recited 108 times over a glass of water, which one drinks after the meditation:

namo bhagavate bhaiśajyaguru vaidūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiśajye bhaiśajye bhaiśajya-samudgate svāhā.

It is revealing that the words meditation and medication are only a letter apart. They both come from the Latin root word ‘medeor’ meaning to heal.

Medicine Buddha App is a digital platform that connects you to vetted Tibetan Medicine Doctors and Wellbeing Practitioners using the safety, convenience and confidentiality of an App.

Tibetan Medicine, or Sowa Rigpa (གསོ་བ་རིག་པ) as it is known in Tibetan, is a unique 2,500-year-old system of integrative medicine that uses predictive diagnostics and targeted prevention to personalise a holistic healing system for patients. Doctors sequentially match the level of treatment with the severity of the disorder.
Tibetan Medicine doctors use herbal, physical, nutritional/dietary, behavioural, psychological and spiritual interventions to treat conditions. This compliments the Tibetan sense of self that encompasses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. The Tibetan Medicine doctor may recommend herbal supplements, teas and therapies such as Tibetan acupuncture, cupping and massage.

Tibetan Medicine doctors use pulse analysis, urine analysis, patient observations and patient history taking to diagnose the patient. Telehealth only allows the later two methods of diagnosis.
However, not only are 1 on 1 video consultations a safe way to practice Tibetan Medicine during the pandemic for both patients and practitioners, but also it makes Tibetan medicine more widely accessible for everyone.
Our Tibetan Medicine doctors have assured us that they can make effective diagnoses without pulse and urine analysis by observing the patient on the screen and discussing their medical history. This is particularly relevant for chronic conditions where the doctor does not need to be present physically to undertake a diagnosis. A patient’s full history and current symptoms can help a doctor make an accurate predictive diagnosis.

Your Tibetan Medicine doctor may suggest dietary supplements. Please note, our doctors are not incentivised to prescribe supplements. You are free to choose whether or not to purchase the recommended supplements. All supplements are distributed by Medicine Buddha Limited.

When prescribing supplements, doctors take into consideration:

  • Condition
  • Patient’s previous medical history
  • Strength of the patient
  • Age
  • Metabolic rate
  • Environment/Climate

Our supplements are plant-based and vegan. They not contain any additives and preservatives. None of our supplements contain mercury.

All the ingredients in our supplements are listed on our packaging. We source all our supplements from two clinics in India run by Tibetan Medicine doctors, and our systems and controls logs details of the batch of supplements for your safety. Our doctors are trained to enquire if you have any allergies before they recommend any supplements.

If you are prescribed any Tibetan Medicine supplements, your Tibetan Medicine doctor will explain how to take the Medicine during your consultation. He or she will also include notes in your prescription and these will be displayed on the packaging which is personalised for you.

Please note some of our supplements should not be consumed on an empty stomach; these are highlighted with appropriate instructions on the packaging. Always read all instructions on the packaging before taking any supplements.

Tibetan Medicine supplements are round, bead-like and sometimes bitter in taste as they do not contain any additives or preservatives. You may use a pill crusher if it helps you ingest the supplements, although most people simply bite them.

Our team personally vet each practitioner on the app to ensure, primarily, that they are purpose-led to help others.

Tibetan Medicine doctors on App:
Each doctor and practitioner must hold appropriate training and/or accreditation. All our doctors have a Tibetan Medical College graduating certificate (a five-year course and one-year clinical practice residency) and are members of the Central Council of Tibetan Medicine, the regulatory body for all practicing Tibetan Medical doctors. We make an independent audit that their names do appear on the regulatory body’s Register.

Wellbeing Practitioners:
Our monks and nuns hold Geshe and Geshma degrees (male and female equivalents) which are analogous to PhDs with over 20 years of academic thought and learning.

Our Yoga teachers must completed an accredited Yoga Teachers Training.

Our Psychotherapists have a Bachelors and Masters degree in Psychology / Clinical Psychology and some clinical practice.

Our team holds video chat interviews with prospective doctors and practitioners to vet their communication, interpersonal and language skills. In addition, each doctor and practitioner has to successfully conduct at least two trial consultations on the app in the languages listed in their profile.

We are a 100%Tibetan team to ensure that the service you receive is authentically Tibetan.

By verifying each of our Tibetan Medicine doctors and wellbeing practitioners on the app is a Tibetan with the appropriate qualifications, we can guarantee you will receive an authentic service. In addition, our Pay it Forward scheme, which provides scholarships for the next generation of Tibetan Medicine doctors and practitioners, gives back to the community which safeguards the culture and traditions of Tibetan Medicine.
